How PageRank is passed from one site to another

I have heard some really wild ideas about the Google PageRank. You wouldn’t believe some of the ideas people come up with about the Google PageRank. Not sure how some of these ideas are formed as there is alot of accurate info available and Google even disputes some of the bad info. But anyways this article is meant to explain how PageRank is passed from one domain to another.

Here are some myths that are being circulated:

  • If I link to other sites from my sites I will lose rankings
  • If I link to site b from my site I will lose PageRank to them
  • If I keep my outbound links small I will have a higher PR and better rankings

Those are just a few of the ones that get around. First of all linking to other sites can be the best thing you can do. First of all by linking to other sites it will not effect your rankings. Yes their PR score may get a small boost by you linking to them but in the next update you aren’t going to lose a point because of it.
Also if you link to other authority resources your visitors will not only see that you have a knowledge of other related sites but that you are big enough to offer them the ability to view them as well. You also don’t have to worry about your PR being transfered to their sites. There is a great benefit of having a FREE(none asked for) resource links.

How is PageRank passed from one site to another?
When a website links to your site using a static url link some PR is passed to your site. This doesn’t mean that if you link to a bunch of sites you are going to lose your PR to them. I like to think of it as this:
My site is a PR6. Lets say for examples sake that it takes 100 PR points to make 1 PR value. So if I link from my PR6 site to another site they get 6 PR points. These are points not values. It takes 100 points to make one value remember. This is just a example. Obviously it doesn’t work exactly like this but it is similar.

Does the Yahoo! Directory pass PR?
No it doesn’t. If you goto the yahoo directory and do a search however your mouse over one of the URLs. Notice the link doesn’t go straight to the site but goes through a referrer URL so that Yahoo can track it. So this link would not pass PR to your site.

Does the ODP or DMOZ Directory pass PR?
Yes it does. If you hover over a link you will see that is a direct link and not a referral link. A Dmoz listing is very beneficial even excluding any PR benefits. Not to mention being listed in the Google directory which is taken from the ODP.

How much PR do I receive for a backlink?
The example I used was just that an example however it is abit how it works. When you link to a site or it links to you that site gets a little pr points which count towards a PR value. Sites that have big links pages give only a very little points to each site therefore a link on a home page or content page which only has a few outgoing links gives you more value.

How do I determine if a site will give me PR value?
First of all you should make sure that page is being crawled and indexed. Goto the source and check the meta tags to make sure the site isn’t blocking Google from indexing that page. Then make sure there are links to it from other indexed pages on the site. A orphaned link on a links page is next to useless to you. Then lastly as I mentioned up above make sure the url is a direct link and not a referral or NOFOLLOW link. Goto the source and make sure that within the ahref tag there is no NOFOLLOW tag or else the link will not pass you pr.

What effects how much PR is passed?
The amount of PR points that you receive for a back link depends on a variety of things. It is determined by the number of backlinks to the site, back links to that page, anchor text, in-site link structure to that page and its importance rating that only Google knows. Also link exchanges give you much less value than a one-way link would. If at all possible get one-ways over recip. Or try and exchange a small mini banner link for their html link.

What effect does PR have on my rankings?

Absolutely none. Some fiddle heads have been spreading this idea that PR effects your rankings. When in fact it has no effect on it. Where does this idea come from? The Google PageRank. No not the toolbar PR but the Google PageRank which Google sets for each site inside. The one NOBODY knows the value of.
But doesn’t a higher PR mean Google will let me have more rankings on bigger terms? Not at all. A low PR site can take any phrase just as well as a high PR site as long as the right back links are pointing to it. Remember QUALITY of backlinks produces a rankings but the QUANTITY of back links produces a high PR so there really is no way you could say that PR effects rankings.

    Hello Jake!
Yes the info is all written by me so far. I am attempting to get other SEO to partner with me and write their own articles. But at this point it is just me running the blog. I am getting help for the forums however….

Glad to here your ready to start your own site. I wouldn’t worry about adsense. It is irrelevant at this point. You should worry about writing good content for your site but first of course you should make sure you start your site about something you are interested in and know a good deal about. Once you start getting traffic put a nice ad block on the site and keep it out of the way of your visitors so it isn’t annoying.

I would waarn against using services that sell you traffic by the 1000’s. If it is real humans visiting your site it is still crap and you don’t want it. You don’t want to have to pay people to come to your site. You want them coming because they think you got something. This doesn’t mean that once you get going you shouldn’t try Adwords. Adwords is great and can produce great traffic. Good luck with your sites and continue to read the blog!
    Thanks for the comments!
