How to Conquer Google for Beginners
I have been asked over and over for a guide to achieving high rankings in Google from the beginning, from scratch. This article series will cover everything from the basics of starting the site to the more advanced seo and link building information. This article series is not intended to be a end-all resource and definitely is going to miss something but it should give you all the info you will need to conquer any position in Google with a little money, a lot of hard work and patience. If you don’t have that especially the latter white hat seo is not for you. White hat takes hard work and patience but is well worth it.
Okay first of all we need to figure out what this site is going to be about. And no were not going to go check Google Adwords for high paying keywords. That is the fastest way to creating a dead-beat site. When starting your site money should not be the primary focus. If it will you are likely to give up after a little waiting and are bound to keep your visitors wanting something other than what you have. So when you start your site it should be targeted towards a topic you are very familiar with and/or have a passion for. If you don’t know that terribly much about the topic but are very passionate about it then run with it.
This article will show you how to create a successful site in weeks for any subject.
I am a World War I/II fan. I enjoy reading about stories of men and women and bravery is risking their life for another. Because of this passion I have for it I will soon be starting a site to honor the men and women of WWI/II, Vietnam, current Iraq wars and other wars. So in our demonstration we will be starting a WW stories fan site. This will be started from the ground up and all the methods we use will be available to any webmaster. We will not be using link exchanges, directory submissions or other out-dated techniques.
Okay now we got our main interest category. Notice I did not say keyword. Targeting WW/WWII keywords would not be very effective however the traffic wouldn’t hurt. We will soon do a little research on keywords we can target effectively. Some of these may be low competition long-tail keywords which are a lot of times highly targeted.
We now need to find a domain for our site. Our domain should contain our main interest keyword so it is targeted and easily identifiable with the content. I recommend a .com/.org. The .info class is widely spammed and so will get sandboxed. We will attempt to escape it with our .com
Now we got our domain. We now must select a web development type. We can use a blog service such as WordPress, a regular site or a content management system. Just remember if we use a blog changing over to a normal site in the future may not be easy. Because of the type of site we are creating it will be best to start off with a regular html site. We may then add forums, blogs and other resources.
We must decide what this site is going to be. What are we going to offer and what type of world war stuff will we be targeting? We have already decided it will provide stories of brave world war heroes. We could have a WW mailing list which could keep visitors coming back to the site . But we really need to figure out some link-bait ideas….
We could create a relation tree which will find out if you had relatives in any of the world wars. Such a tool might gather good backlinks from various other world war sites. Some of these will be very high quality. This will give your site great value and help you achieve higher rankings. Of course such a tool would cost some good money so you would have to decide if it is worth it. IMO it would be just for the link bait.
We will now create our site. Our title will be Heroes of World Wars - Stories of untold bravery
not short or long. Just about perfect. This title will get the attention of searchers looking for world war stories. Keep in mind: Always write your meta tags for your visitors so that they are related to your page and describe it well.
We will now create a description:
Description:
Heroes of World Wars tells the stories of countless men and women who served in the World Wars for the freedom of their countries. Heroes of World Wars site has a great burden to share these stories that otherwise would be unknown. This site is here because every soldier is a hero and we want to respect their dedication to their country.
It is probably not the best description but is for demonstration purposes only. It does however describe what the site is about and is not mis-leading. Mis-leading titles only increase bandwidth to the home page and bounce rate.
Don’t use a Meta Keyword tag because it is not counted by any of the major search engines any longer. If do feel the need just enter your main keyword.
Our site will be html so most of the links will be html and so will be easily crawlable by search engine robots. Our home page interface is going to contain a news header at the very top which contains a few lines and then a link to the full article. This can be news for the site, news of MIA soldiers found or whatever. Next we will have the recent WW hero story with a brief description and link to the full article. We can then have links on the side to WW battle stories. Interesting info about World Wars and the war lords that fought it out. We will have a World War gallery where pictures of world war can be posted and viewed. You can even have a memorabilia page for those WW collectors.
We have now created our site. We now have to promote it and build backlinks. We have one linkbait idea that we will use but need others. Lets take a look at a Google search for World War - the first two results are links to wikipedia resources. Those definitely get good traffic. We can have our link listed here but we will not add it now as it will get taken off. We first need to build our site up a little and have a few war stories and information floating around on there. Once we get it build up a little we can submit our site to the external links section: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_War_I#External_links
The next result is for a resource of World War I. This site is dedicated to World War I only yet they may still link to us because our site is for both WWI & II. This is another url to put on our list of sites to request from.
We can do searches for ‘World war II’, ‘world war stories’, ‘world war bravery’, ‘world war heroes’ and related terms to find related sites that may link to you. But remember don’t ask them yet. If you do they will notice the site is new lacks content and are likely to ignore you or deny the request. Wait till you have some good articles/stories. We are targeting a great term as many of these webmasters will not be worried about linking to a good WW resource like some other sites would be. This will make it easier for us.
If you care to write your articles/stories based on certain keywords you can use Aaron Walls Keyword Research Tool
just make sure the article still looks natural and effects its purpose. You can use this to find different keywords to target. I am not going in-depth with this because I got an article planned for that.
Lets go back to google and do another search for ‘World War links’. Most of these results are for pages that link to other WW resources. This can be a easy way to build up some backlinks fast and works for most targets. Getting into Dmoz can bring some good traffic as well but again the site must have some good content be unique and fresh or it will be denied. If you do different searches in google you can find tons of sites related to WW that will probably link to another good WW resource site.
And then to our next link bait idea. {If I am jumping around too much sorry. :P}
Forums… yes I just said that nasty word and you can now stone me. I didn’t say forum signature or even forum links however that is what I had in mind. Not as a way to get Google rankings but as a way to build up a little traffic which may lead to a tell-a-friend campaign and link bait. The more visitors coming the more chance they may let someone else know or post a link on their site. So lets do a search for ‘world war forums’
If you post and become a authority on WW information or atleast known for WW information and have a link in your sig you can get some good traffic from it. Spend time at a bunch of different forums and post daily if possible.
And one last idea for getting some good backlinks. Write up 10-20+ articles about World Wars and submit them to various article directories. Submit 1 per site and you will gain some good backlinks.

This site has a list of a few good ones as well: beansoftware.com/Article-Sites-Master-List.aspx
If you write good articles most will accept them and you can get hundreds of one-way links overnight literally but remember one article per site.
If you submit 5 or so articles you can usually skip the sandbox and are likely to start ranking for small keywords.
Don’t worry about PageRank when asking for links. That is irrelevant. PR has no influence on rankings or value of a site. If a page goes supplemental write a article and submit it to a article directory with a link to that page. It will likely come out in a few days. If it doesn’t just get a few more links to that page.
I was meaning to write a series of articles in parts but I think instead I will write this main one and then future ones on Keyword Research and other topics. If you want a specific article on a specific topic you will need to send a specific email to me at randy@NOSPAM1st-rankings.com
