Google funding terrorist efforts
I meant to get to this way back on the 5th but never got around to it. It really annoys me though that people are so stupid. Sorry to be so blunt but you have to be stupid to come up with such a retarded idea. Well let me back up a little for those who may not have heard. SearchEngineJournal made a post on Google making money off from and for terrorist groups here: http://www.searchenginejournal.com/?p=4079
First of all let me ask a question. Okay I am saving up my money for a Lamborghini so I create a site and put adsense on it. I begin making money and funding my project. Google knows nothing of this money-making project and as long as I don’t do anything shady that would send the red alert buzz out everything about my account and ads will be automated. A live person will not be seeing anything so how can they be funding my sports car purchase? Okay they are inadvertently funding it. That is like a cop accusing a road-worker of providing aid to a bank robbery that was made using the roads that that particular road-worker had helped build. Sorry if that doesn’t seem the same to you but it is. In both situations the product/service was a good tool and was never intended to be used this way just as a wrench was never intended to be used as a murder weapon. If it was does that make the manufacturer a accomplice in that murder? I think we should be careful running around with crazy ideas like this.
Read the rest of the article for the other half of the story. The part that doesn’t make the news.
I don’t spend much time at SitePoint but really like that place. Nice atmosphere(from what I have seen) and there are some really really smart guys there. Anyways I like the way one guy at SitePoint put it when referring to the ‘Google scandel’.
Here is the thread: http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?t=443312
“ Anyone can go set up a blog called “I Love Bin Laden” in 5 minutes, throw their YPN ad code on it, and now Yahoo! is funding terrorists. I wouldn’t call that “a huge scoop” as some of the commentors at SEJ did…
Lots of people have been exploiting PPC ads for cash going all the way back to the goto.com era. Lots of them were probably outside the U.S. and lots of them may hate americans. Americans do it too. “
And peter made the following comment at the same thread – that thread gots some good points. Again sitepoint has some great info.
” Matt Cutts had an interesting comment on Loren’s blog. He says that “The claim is that Google is funding terrorists via AdSense ads on Orkut. That’s false because ad clicks on Orkut don’t pay money to individual users. So it is literally *impossible* for bad guys to be making money via Orkut ads.” I guess if there’s no other evidence than what was on Orkut, this is going to blow over quickly. “
I don’t agree with some of what Matt says but I think he is right about this.
There are many organizations that could be said of ’supporting crime or terrorism’ but I have this strange silly idea that if you didn’t intend for your service to be used that way and you do all in your power to stop it that you are not in anyway funding terrorism.
Want me to tell you the real reason this whole ideas was brought up? Because at the heart is a company that is the largest search engine and overtaking what we formerly knew as the largest businesses. Google is a giant as is America and because of it people find ways of slandering both. As a buddy said in the above thread they could just as well of used Yahoo ads yet I tend to doubt that would of hits the news. The guy who wrote this at searchenginewatch just wanted a news item that would get attention and that in my mind does not say much for a seo.
Forgive me and PLEASE!! don’t send me letters cursing me out because I am defending Google because I am not. I am making a point which defends common sense. Anyone could see that if they were looking.
Ohh gotta go… just got a piece of news on Wal Mart funding Al-Qaida. Sam Walton always did have shifty eyes…
